National Gay and Lesbian Task Force and Center for American Progress to host webinar on maximizing health care reform law benefits for LGBT people and their families
WASHINGTON, March 19 — The National Gay and Lesbian Task Force and the Center for American Progress are marking the second anniversary of the federal health care reform law by spotlighting its impact on lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people and their families. The groups are holding a March 22 webinar, Learn Your Power: How the Affordable Care Act Helps LGBT Americans, with representatives from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and One Colorado, Colorado’s statewide LGBT equality organization, to address this critical issue.Findings from reports such as Injustice at Every Turn: A Report of the National Transgender Discrimination Survey and How to Close the LGBT Health Disparities Gap repeatedly show that LGBT people face a higher incidence of health disparities and greater discrimination in health care settings across the life span. There are also fewer financial and community resources to tackle the serious health issues facing LGBT people and their families, making health care reform even more important. According to HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius, the Affordable Care Act may represent the strongest foundation our nation has ever created to begin closing LGBT health disparities.
