2/25/12 - Articles/books/movies

Hi there
Here are some wonderful movies and books that I have found, some pertaining specifically to the lgbtq communities and some to seniors and senior care.

MOVIES - LGBTQ SENIORS/LIFE STORIES:
1.   CNN youtube video on lesbian's experience of visiting her partner in hospital in Florida:

2. "Hannah Free" - 2009 - Starring Sharon Gless - really touching and powerfully acted movie that focuses on the experience of a lesbian main character and her relationship with her partner in a Michigan nursing home, and, her famil,y as she ages.

3. "Serving in Silence" - this is a powerful story about Colonel Margarette Camermeyer's courageous struggle with the military, which, given that she lives in the Puget Sound area, and, also the overturning of "don't ask, don't tell" is a very poignant movie to watch.  It astutely demonstrates the history of changing attitudes towards lgbtq folks in the military.  It stars Glenn Close.

4. "Forbidden Lives: The Unashamed Stories of Lesbian Lives" - 1994 - this is a wonderful and very powerful movie that focuses on a very clever blend of lesbian pulp fiction and interviews from Toronto, Ontario, in the 1950s.  It shows the experiences of lesbian women of color, including Native American and African American women, as well as class and gender identity issues.

5. "Freeheld" 2005 - This is a documentary focusing on the experience of a lesbian, Laurel Hester, and her fight with the Ocean County, New Jersey Board of Chosen Freeholder's to award her pension to her lesbian partner.   It stars Ellen Page and has won many awards.  Given how lgbt and partnership laws have changed so much recently, this documentary is well worth watching at this time.

6. "Tender Fictions" (1996), "Nitrate Kisses"(1992), and "History Lessons" - These are a trilogy of movies by movie maker, Barbara Hammer, based on lgbt history.  Hammer does a great job of focusing on the different aspects of lgbt culture, including S & M, as well as incorporating interviews with lgbt couples.
"Nitrate Kisses" includes a focus on the lesbian author, Willa Cather as well as the treatment of lesbians by the Third Reich.
"Tender Fictions" focuses on Hammer's experience of growing up a lesbian in a Jewish Ukrainian family.
"History Lessons" is a focus on lesbian lives from the fifties.

MOVIES - SENIORS
1. "A Separation" - 2012 - movie that focuses on how a family copes with many issues in their lives, including the care of of the male character's father who has Alzheimer's and is living in the family home. This is currently playing now and is showing at the Egyptian.  This movie is really powerful and shows the tenderness, compassion, and heart break of having a family member with this condition.  Hopefully, this will be available to watch on Netflix or purchase in the future.

2. "The Iron Lady" - 2012 - this movie is a very poignantly acted movie about the life of former British prime minister, Dame Margaret Thatcher (played by Meryl Streepe), as Thatcher reflects back on her life while experiencing dementia. It is playing in theaters at this time and will hopefully be available soon.  It very powerfully shows the tender experience of being a daughter caring for a very brilliant mother, who is slowly changing into a very different person.

I encourage you to type in "seniors" and "lgbt" into the youtube search engine and many movies will show up, including an "It gets better" movie (based on Seattle's Dan Savage's youtube movies to lgbt youth) featuring an lgbt senior.
